Having Trouble Training Your Dog? Try These Great Tips!

Posted by jerryhuf on January 26, 2016 at 11:35 AM

When crate training your new puppy or dog, there are a few tricks you can apply. Place a treat inside the crate and shut its gate in front of your dog. Your dog will get excited at the prospect of the treat and soon be eager to enter the crate. When they go inside to get the bone, give them lots of positive reinforcement.

Teaching your dog a fun trick, such as "play dead" can be a fun way of distracting him. When your dog’s behavior is bad, simply use the command you have established for his trick instead of using negative punishment. This provides for a fun activity for your dog and creates a positive environment for you as well.

Enforce all of the commands you issue to your dog. Do no issue a command on a whim. Only give a command to your dog if you truly mean it. This can lead to having to repeat your commands. A well-trained dog should only need to be told once to do something.

Treats are not the mainstay for rewarding your pet when training. Dogs will learn that if you give them a treat for a response they should expect it always. This is not necessary and should be reserved for occasional rewards. Dogs see loving, physical contact as a reward as well and will enjoy it much more than a treat that is gone in a split second.

Always be kind and patient with your dog. Understand that training dogs can be frustrating since some dogs have a more difficult time learning obedience than others. Always try not to lose your temper and resist the urge to scream or shout at your dog. Also, never hit your dog as this will only serve to confuse it and will actually make training more difficult.

Use the time that you spend with your dog on a walk as an opportunity to reinforce your training program. Not only is this a perfect time to establish a better relationship with your pet, but it also allows you to work on different exercises together. A walk with your dog can be both enjoyable and an opportunity to learn.

When you first bring your puppy home, those first few days are the most important. You should be patient, consistent, and persistent form day one with your new puppy. Be sure not to let your puppy get away with behaviors you are not going to allow and positively reinforce the behaviors you are wanting to see.
